The South African situation
With the number of orphans rising daily, extended families can no longer cope with the burden of more orphans. Many children are left to care for themselves and their younger siblings. To make things worse, child-headed households have no access to any form of social security. These children simply have no way of supporting themselves, especially if they are still at school. For orphans living with adults, child support grants are available, but only up to the age of 13 and a half.
Sponsor a Child, a project of Care for Kids, directs funding to orphans who would otherwise have nothing. The need is urgent. For some, sponsorship will mean that they don't need to resort to desperate action - like prostitution or crime - to fill their stomachs and care for smaller siblings.
It really is a matter of life and death, day by day.
What if you decide to sponsor a child?
You can make the difference, one child at a time. Your monthly contribution of R240 supports a particular child. We teach your sponsored child to budget the money to buy essential supplies.
As a sponsor, you receive:

an introductory profile of the child

a photograph of the child
-
an update on the child's progress twice a year
The amount of your monthly contribution is the same as the government's child support grant. The Minister of Finance adjusts this amount each year and announces the new amount in his annual budget speech in April. When there is an increase, we get in touch with our sponsors to ask them to increase their sponsorships if possible.
All the money you give goes to the child. We cover our administrative costs from other sources.
How does it work?

Care for Kids does a full assessment of household circumstances and income.

We help each child to budget effectively.

Local church members monitor use of the sponsorship.

Local church members provide emotional support.

The programme is supported by a registered social worker.
